umbrella of our GHD in the Community program, we contribute to a
range of not-for-profit organisations, support the volunteer
activities our people, provide pro-bono services and respond to
Food Bank Waterloo
GHD employees demonstrated their generosity and commitment
to the community by raising a record CAD23,500 to support local
families in need. In recognition of our efforts, the Food Bank of
Waterloo Region presented GHD with its 2013-2014 Corporate Leader
Award. Fundraising efforts included a carwash, an Oktoberfest
pretzel sale, raffle baskets, a silent auction, a BBQ, and a
MS Bike Ride Canada
years in a row, our team has participated in the MS Bike 150 –
Grand Bend to London Tour, in support of the Multiple Sclerosis
(MS) Society of Canada. They have raised approximately CAD135,000
in total, making them a Top 10 fundraiser for the event.
Cans stack up to a great contribution at CANstruction
GHD’s team with their canned food structure which won "Best
Since 2006, GHD has been a proud supporter of CANstruction, an
annual charity design and build competition of structures made
entirely out of canned food. As part of this competition our Canada
team has donated more than 17,000 lbs. of food to the Toronto Daily
Bread Food Bank.
CANstruction aims to fight world hunger, and GHD's people
contributed their time and financial support by collecting food and
financial donations for the cause. GHD's participation in the 2013
competition resulted in the donation of more than 2200 lbs. of food
while the structure won in the 'Best Meal" category.

Life 10k Run

GHD participated in this year’s Sporting Life 10k run/walk event
in Toronto. More than 40 GHD people took part in the run/walk
event, contributing to the fundraising goal of CAD 2.4 million.
Funds support the operation of Camp Oochigeas, a privately funded,
volunteer based organisation that provides kids affected by cancer
with a unique opportunity for growth through challenging, fun,
enriching and magical experiences. With a united spirit, GHD's
participants completed the event in harrowing conditions,
experiencing rain, hail and snow as they completed the event.
GHD serves up support at Heatwave
2013 Beach Volleyball Corporate Team Challenge
GHD’s team gets into the game at Heatwave 2013
On July 6, 2013, a team of GHD people participated in the 19th
annual Heatwave Beach Volley Ball Corporate Team challenge at
Ashbridges Bay, Toronto. The team raised CAD578 for the SickKids
Foundation which is a pioneer in the study of cancer stem cells.
Each year, approximately 1400 Canadian children are diagnosed with
cancer of which a quarter will come to SickKids, making it the
largest pediatric cancer centre in Canada.
GHD operates in diverse and complex communities across the world. As we grow, our responsibility expands. We define sustainability as improving human well-being without compromising the local or global environment. This means integrating social, economic and environmental issues into core business to achieve responsible operations.
Recent initiatives and policies:
- Participation in the 2008 UN Climate Change Summit.
- Support of core environmental activities around the world including World Environment Day, Earth Hour, Clean Up Australia, Clean Up the World.
- Global agenda: GHD recognizes the rapidly increasing urgency for society and business to address the global sustainability challenges of efficient use of natural and human capital, loss of biodiversity, poverty and population growth.
- Policy: Our Sustainability and Environment policy reflects GHD's commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen.
- Strategy: In 2008, we established a Sustainability Advisory Group (SAG) to guide the implementation of our sustainability strategy.
GHD LEED gurus present insights on certification process
Gretchen BeVard and Peter Lindabury, of our Syracuse, NY office, recently presented at the annual ESF Environmental School of Forestry Green Building Conference in Syracuse. Their presentation focused on LEED certification and the detailed process and individual credits associated with building design and construction.
After completing the LEED certification review process more than 30 times, Peter and Gretchen exhibit significant experience regarding the review process and criteria. Their presentation explained what the LEED certification process entails, including a credit by credit breakdown explaining what the concept of the credit is, what the submittal requirements are and what to include for extra documentation.
Recycle at Work Business Program award goes to pragmatic Portland office
GHD's Portland office won Washington County's 2011 Recycle at Work Business Program award for buying 100% recycled office products and furniture, equipment with EnergyStar ratings, recycling all allowable content, using motion sensor lighting throughout the office, adopting sustainable printing practices, and using reusable kitchen dishware, silverware and water bottles.
GHD Sustainable Seminar Series
GHD is bringing industry and academic leaders together to discuss environmental issues at the GHD Sustainable Seminar Series held in New York and Connecticut. The most recent forum focused on the long-term management and monitoring of green infrastructure practices. By hosting and facilitating these seminars GHD is providing a forum for knowledge sharing and collaboration around sustainability.
